This calendar series began in 2025 and falls within the larger intervention, Ancestors in Progress — a portrait series celebrating the aesthetic diversity of Afro-descendant people and our many languages.
Each monthly portrait is an original painting based on a real person. While rooted in a self-developed calligraphy style, the artist draws inspiration from numerous forms of mark-making across the continent: from the facial markings of the Benin bronzes and scarification techniques, to wood-carved face masks, head and neck ornaments, jewellery and textiles.
The name of the series is also a reminder that ancestral work does not begin in death, but in how you are living in this very moment. Your presence has always had, and will continue to have, consequences.
